What the men say

Every note below is from a man who went, in his own words. Nothing here was written for the website.

The Father's Guild Retreat was the retreat I didn't know I needed.

For a few days, I traded notifications, meetings, and responsibilities for mountains, silence, physical challenge, incredible food, and honest conversations with a group of men who all shared one thing in common: a desire to show up better for the people who matter most.

Being completely off-grid was one of the greatest gifts. Without distractions, I found the mental space to reflect, think, and simply be present. The wayfinding experience pushed me outside my comfort zone, the physical challenges reminded me what I'm capable of, and the conversations around the fire and on the trail were more impactful than anything I could experience within my own network.

Pat has built something incredibly intentional. He doesn't just lead a retreat, he creates an environment where growth naturally happens. There's structure without rigidity, challenge without ego, and space for every person to take away exactly what they need. And I can't say enough about Taz's meals. After long days outdoors, every meal felt like it was made with care, bringing everyone together around the table and fueling both body and spirit.

I came home feeling recentered, realigned, and more intentional about the husband, father, and leader I want to be. My family may never fully understand everything that happened on that mountain, but they'll benefit from the man who came home.

Thank you, Pat.

To be perfectly honest, I wasn't exactly sure what I was getting into. I wasn't sure if this was for me. Who does this kind of thing? It turns out, I do. I got a chance to be myself, challenge myself, relax, reflect, and reset. I came home feeling fresh, inspired, and rejuvenated. Some parts were challenging, some parts were fun, and others were downright luxurious (namely, the food!). Thank you, Pat, for welcoming me into your home. I returned to mine stronger and clearer. I'll remember and appreciate my time at The Fathers Guild for a very long time. It's pretty amazing that you created a space for dads like this.

Pat created exactly what so many fathers need: space to step away from the noise, be challenged, and come home more grounded.

When I heard about this retreat, I knew it was exactly what I needed as a father and husband. Life with kids, work, and constant technology can move so fast that it's hard to slow down and honestly reflect on who you are and who you want to become.

I've known Pat for a long time, he was one of my first CrossFit coaches, and he is one of the few people I would trust to lead something like this. Even so, the retreat exceeded my expectations. It was so thoughtfully organized, challenging, inclusive, and full of activities that were both meaningful and fun.

Pat clearly understands the challenges fathers face, and he has created the right environment, tools, and community for men to grow. The experience was priceless, and I know it will have a lasting impact on me and my family.

I wasn't exactly sure what to expect going into the retreat. One of my concerns was that it might be a little too “out there” for me, but that couldn't have been further from the truth. It was simply an incredible experience filled with genuine connection, meaningful conversations, and a great group of guys.

Pat was awesome. One minute he's cracking jokes, and the next he's leading conversations with real depth and wisdom. He creates an environment where you feel comfortable being yourself. One of the biggest things I took away was realizing that I'm not alone. So many of the struggles I've carried, I discovered other men are carrying too. That alone was incredibly freeing. I also came away with the realization that I don't need to be anyone other than myself. It's not just okay to be authentic, it's exactly who I'm supposed to be.

The retreat itself was a good balance of quiet reflection, genuine connection, physical activity, and simply enjoying life together. Whether it was spending time in the pool, sauna, or cold plunge, or sharing conversations, everything felt intentional. Taz's cooking was outstanding. Every breakfast, lunch, and dinner was something to look forward to.

If you're considering attending but have any reservations like I did, I'd encourage you to go. I left feeling lighter, more connected, more appreciative of my friendships, and more like myself.

I've known Pat Barber for years, and I know how much thought and heart he puts into helping fathers become stronger, more present, and more intentional dads. The Fathers Guild retreat is a unique opportunity to step away from everyday life, challenge yourself, have honest conversations with other fathers, and reconnect with what really matters. I highly recommend this experience to any dad who is ready for a reset and wants to come home a better father, partner, and man.

The opportunity to unplug from the outside world, spend time reflecting in nature, and hang out with a group of quality guys who are in the same boat is invaluable. The Father's Guild Retreat delivers all that and more. Besides providing the perfect environment for quieting your mind and reflecting, Pat creates a structure that encourages safe discomfort, physical and emotional challenges, and plenty of quiet reflection. During my time at the retreat, I saw lives change irrevocably for the better, including mine. I cannot recommend this highly enough. Every father, hell, every man, should go on this retreat.

If you are anything like me, you owe it to yourself and to your family to go on this retreat. I knew I wanted to be the best father and husband that I could, but I didn't know how to become that man. Don't worry, Pat figured that out and has developed an incredible way to teach you the skills to become the man you want to be.

While this is the first retreat I have been on, I would be shocked to find another that makes better use of the time. Pat's retreat perfectly balances activities, discussions, and individual time in a way where nothing feels rushed or unplanned. Instead, every moment feels intentionally planned and purposeful, with each one imparting a skill you can implement at home.

My group couldn't have been comprised of people from more different backgrounds, something that I feared could derail the retreat. Again, Pat already considered this. Instead of letting us dwell on differences, Pat brought us all together through our commonality: the desire to be a better man.

If you are on the fence, or even just considering this, please go! Pat, on behalf of my whole family, thank you for helping me become a better man.

I came into The Father's Guild retreat not looking to fix something, but because I wanted to intentionally invest in becoming a better husband, father, and man. Life with my wife, four boys, and meaningful work is full and wonderful, but it's rare to step away from the noise long enough to slow down, reflect, and recharge.

Pat created something truly special. Through time around the fire, outdoor challenges, quiet reflection, and honest conversations with other dads, genuine connection happened incredibly quickly.

I left the retreat feeling refreshed, grateful, and excited to return home to the people I love most. I would recommend this experience to any dad who wants to step away from the busyness of life, reconnect with what matters, and continue growing into the man his family needs.

Back in May, I attended Pat's Fathers Retreat. I had signed up back in January after a friend who attended the previous year's retreat encouraged me to go. He had gone because his business was going through some major changes, and he needed a chance to step away and reset.

He knew I was balancing a busy, demanding career with life at home alongside my beautiful wife and our three kids. I had realized that somewhere along the way, I had stopped making time for myself, my hobbies, and my friendships the way I used to. So I decided to take a leap of faith. I was definitely nervous about flying across the country to spend several days with a group of people I had never met, but that uncertainty became part of the adventure.

From the moment I arrived, Pat and his family made everyone feel welcome. The other fathers were incredible people, and many of us were there for similar reasons, to disconnect from the constant demands of work, technology, schedules, and the pressure of always watching the clock.

Living without technology felt strange at first, but it quickly became one of the most valuable parts of the experience. It reminded me just how much our phones shape our attention and daily lives.

Spending time outdoors in the beautiful California landscape, taking on fun physical activities, and simply slowing down was incredibly refreshing. We shared amazing meals prepared by Pat's wife and kids, gathered around a cozy outdoor hangout with a mini kitchen and fireplace, and had meaningful conversations that I'll never forget.

Listening to each father's story: the highs, the lows, the challenges, and the lessons learned, created an environment where it felt natural to be open and honest. As men, we don't always have opportunities to talk about the deeper things weighing on our minds.

Hearing different perspectives helped me realign my priorities, strengthen my values, and deepen my sense of purpose.

I left the retreat feeling refreshed, grounded, and more connected, to nature, to time, and to what truly matters. The experience continues to influence how I approach my work, my friendships, my family, and my everyday life.

If you're interested but feeling hesitant, I'd encourage you to go for it. It's an incredible adventure, and I don't think you'll regret it. Sometimes stepping away from the busyness of life is exactly what you need to return with a clearer mind, a fuller heart, and a healthier perspective.

This was a life-changing experience. I went to this retreat feeling burnt out and broken. The adventures and conversations helped me rekindle my purpose.
